Cliff consolidation at the Port of Mahón
Mahón, Menorca
DRACE GEOCISA was awarded the works to consolidate action unit UA2 in area 5b of the Port of Mahon Master Plan (Menorca).
The Mahón cliff is made of Myocene materials that are constantly being degraded and eroded, tending to weaken the sandier levels, with the result that blocks may come loose, creating a hazard for properties at the bottom or top of the cliff.
The project units consisted of treatment of the cliff as a whole (including existing items such as walls) in order to consolidate it and avoid falling rocks. The action was also used to extend the existing lookout point and restore and reopen the park, pavement and parking areas in the lower part, which had been closed because of the previous rockfalls.
The actions carried out consisted of: clearing vegetation, bolting, stitching blocks, injecting cracks, re-pointing masonry walls, draining off filtration water, shoring cornices, consolidating silicate salts, and refurbishing and recovering the pavements, parking areas and parkland below.
